CERT Training Objectives review

So we can review, the training objectives of the CERT program are:
1. Describe the types of hazards that are most likely to affect their homes and communities.
2. Describe the functions of CERTs and their role in immediate response.
3. Take steps to prepare yourself for a disaster.
4. Identify and reduce potential fire hazards in their homes or workplaces.
5. Work as a team to apply basic fire suppression strategies, resources, and safety measures to extinguish a pan fire.
6. Apply techniques for opening airways, controlling bleeding, and treating for shock.
7. Conduct triage under simulated disaster conditions.
8. Perform head-to-toe patient assessments.
9. Select and set up a treatment area.
10. Employ basic treatments for various wounds, and apply splints to suspected fractures and sprains.
11. Identify planning and size up requirements for potential search and rescue situations.
12. Describe the most common techniques for searching a structure.
13. Work as a team to apply safe techniques for debris removal and victim extrication.
14. Describe ways to protect rescuers during search and rescue operations.
15. Describe the post-disaster emotional environment and the steps that rescuers can take to relieve their own stressors and those of disaster survivors.
16. Describe CERT organization and documentation requirements.
17. Create an Incident Command System structure to manage and account for all team members working at an incident.

Initial Post

Our immediate goal is to assess the size and needs of our CERT 'community', and establish some initial goals. Perhaps these will do for a start:

1) Share class photos: Fairfax County CERT-27 & 28, and perhaps some others who completed our CERT training 2007 June 9, and even more who participated in the exercise, will have a bunch of photos to share.

2) There are certainly other sites or communities who are addressing the same issues. As you learn of them, please post.

3) Let's make the connection between the county/state and personal emergency plans. The County has a number of disaster plans. We will be building our personal and family and neighborhood disaster plans, scaling up to fit with the larger plans, and allowing all individuals to participate as fully as possible using the resources each person has at their command.

1) I don't know if you are able to post photos directly to this blog. If so, good. If not, you might post them elsewhere ( like Kodak or My Space), and just post a link here.

3) Some county disaster plan documents require some publication control because they address susceptible sites or resources. I'm told you might need to show ID and sign for copies, but they are still public. Electronic copies may be free, but printed copies might have a small duplicating cost.
